AAA864 Dogon sculpture
This Dogon Nommo statue, originally from Mali, is a fine example of African art and culture. It dates from the 20th century and measures 25x23.5x68 cm. This unique statue is carved from natural wood and represents a seated female figure. The hands are placed on the stomach, as a sign of fertility. The face is oval and harmonious, with big expressive eyes and a smiling mouth. The hair is carefully styled. The statue is supported by four ancestral figures, or Nommo, that are symmetrical and geometric. They are carved in relief and should represent ancestors who are considered to be authority figures.
