Dyonyeni AAA869 sculpture
The Dyonyeni figurine, carved from wood by the Bambara tribe of Mali, is a culturally significant symbol. These works are closely linked to the southern Dyo and Kwore societies. In the Bambara tradition, they represent the maternal figure, seen as the embodiment of Faro, the goddess of water and mother of humanity. Faro symbolizes natural elements such as rain, the rainbow, as well as thunder and lightning. Dyonyeni figures are distinguished by marked geometric features, including a conical or rounded chest. The blacksmiths of the Dyo Society used these figures in dances celebrating the end of initiation ceremonies, actively manipulating them and placing them at the center of the ceremonial circle. This Dyonyeni AAA869 is a unique piece from the middle of the 20th century and originally from Mali.
