Chihongo AAA706 mask
This Chihongo mask, originally from Angola, is a fine example of African art and culture. It dates from the 20th century and measures 19x21x28 cm. Chihongo masks were traditionally used in Chokwe religious and social ceremonies. They were supposed to represent the spirits of ancestors or deities. This unique mask is carved from wood and represents a male spirit. The face is rounded and marked with the cross of Saint Andrew. The eyes are half-closed and the “tear” marks are visible under the eyes. The nose is wide and the mouth is open, with pointed teeth.
