This Dan mask, originally from Côte d'Ivoire, is a fine example of African art and culture. It dates from the middle of the 20th century and measures 8x13x24 cm. The mask is carved from wood and represents a male spirit. The face is oval and harmonious, with big expressive eyes and a smiling mouth. The teeth are pointed, as was the custom among the Dan people. Dan masks were traditionally used in Dan religious and social ceremonies. They were supposed to represent the spirits of ancestors or deities.
