This Yoruba ceremonial ax, originally from Nigeria, is a fine example of African art and culture. It dates from the middle of the 20th century and measures 22x4x58.5 cm. The ax consists of a wrought iron blade and a carved wooden handle. The handle is decorated with a human figure, representing an ancestor or a deity. Yoruba ceremonial axes were used during official ceremonies or to display wealth. They served as a mark of rank and authority, and were worn on the shoulder when their owner moved around.
