This beautifully carved Dogon stool is a fine example of African art and culture. It dates from the middle of the 20th century and measures 32.5x32x33 cm. The stool is carved from natural wood and represents two symmetrical discs. The upper disk represents the sky and the lower disk represents the earth. The four ancestral figures or nommo, who support the upper seat, represent ancestors considered to be authority figures. This unique work is a symbol of spirituality and of the connection between man and the divine.
